Why Didn't Smarty Jones Win the Belmont Stakes?

-- submitted by S.G. from Hockissen, DE

The third rade of the Triple Crown is known as a heart breaker. By the time the field rounded the final turn at Belmont Park on a fast track, Smarty Jones had already worked harder than he had in winning the Kentucky Derby and Preakness. Smarty Jones had nothing left. Belmont Park is the cruelest mile and a half in sports. he died yards short of the wire.

Smarty Jones was the best 3-year-old and drew the largest crowd ever -- 120,139 -- to see a sporting event in New York. Only this year's Super Bowl had more TV viewers.

All of us have limits; so do horses. Smarty Jones ran the best race of his career in this race, his first defeat. He ran the hardest he ever did, pounding every inch of that one and a quarter miles. He had every horse beat as he came into that final turn. He was three and a half lengths in front with a quarter mile to go. At that point, exhaustion took over. As a friend told me, "He just ran out of steam."
