On July 8 th 2004, Ashley Ratliff was interviewed. It was a special day for Miss Ashley; it was her Sweet 16th birthday. When Ashley arrived at Largo recreation center, Tom was busy sharing his language with several summer campers. Since it was Ashley 's birthday and we knew she would want to hurry home to prepare for her first date, Camie conducted this interview.
We found a picnic table underneath a large tree, we both sat, I asked Ashley in ASL (American Sign Language) if she would like to conduct the interview Hearing or Deaf, which? I received a puzzled look, then I verbally asked her the same question - thus the interview began:
CG: Ashley you choose a hearing interview, meaning there will be little sign language used, may I ask why?
AR: At this time I am not that confident with my sign language, although I know many signs. I am just not ready for full conversational sign language.
CG: You have a graceful and beautiful flow to your sign language. The more you practice the better you will become, have you been practicing this summer?
AR: Not really, but Calvary Baptist in Clearwater will soon be having their Deaf Vacation Bible School . My Aunt attends church there and I plan on volunteering. I am looking forward to the opportunity to practice there.
CG: I heard you volunteer for several different organizations, would you like to share that with our readers?
AR: I volunteer with the Girl Scouts and also at Heritage Park . I dress up in colonial attire and am part of the Live Tours that are conducted at Heritage Park . It's really exciting because I get to share with many people facts about Florida.
