Ashley Ratliff Interview Continued
CG: Where do you attend school?
AR: I am home schooled. I began being home schooled when I was at the 3 rd grade level, and I am continuing on that path of education.
CG: I understand you will also be attending Saint Petersburg College this fall is that true?
AR: Yes, being home schooled is wonderful, it enables me to further my education at a younger age. I will be considered dual enrolled. Of course, I must first pass the placement tests required by the school, and choose my classes.
CG: What do you mean by duel enrolled?
AR: Well, I will still be attending Maize Middleton's Homes-cool Coop, and of course studying at home. I think what dual enrollment means is that I will be taking college level classes all at the same time.
CG: Will you be taking any more sign language?
AR: Yes, I plan on taking more classes at the coop with Tom , he is so interesting and I just love his class.
CG: All last year you were learning through Tom , is there any thing special that remains with you.
AR; (Smiles) I learned " Deaf people are just the same. Deaf are portrayed as handicapped, but they are not they can do what ever they want they are the same as any one else"
CG: What are your life choices? What I mean is do you have a plan? Do you know what kind of profession you see your self in as an adult?
AR: Yes, I want to become an Interpreter. Once I accomplish that I will work and use the money I earn to further myself to my ultimate goal of becoming a Lawyer.
CG: How did you feel when you were presented with the Brenda Bassford Scholarship? And in Conclusion if you could tell every one thing you've learned about Deaf individuals what would you tell them?
AR: My initial thought was " Why me? I am awful at sign language" then I was really happy it was me. I knew I was starting SPC in the fall and my original plans were to work all summer to help pay for it, by winning it gave me the opportunity to enjoy summer! What would I tell every one- simply " Treat them the same!"
