What Got Us Hooked ...
by : Tom Cooney
What got us hooked? There are 3 thousand; yes, count them three thousand languages that do not have even one verse of the Bible. Hard to believe in
this day and age of super high tech where the spoken and written words are instantaneously transmitted around the world.
We wandered around the exhibit tents of JAARS at the Clearwater Airport on Hercules, Sunday April 24th. In the distance we saw a helicopter sitting like a giant bird on a perch.
This was our chance. I looked at the helicopter and could see how valuable this machine was in spreading God’s word to remote and inaccessible territories that people and cultures inhabit all over the earth far off the beaten path. You would be amazed when you learn that there are so many who have not been blessed with the wisdom that we recognize. Imagine going deep into the jungles of the Congo where cannibals and pygmies live, setting foot in impregnable mountain villages.
These were my thoughts as I approached the waiting chopper. The whirling peppppa of the rotor blades made a strange sound that my hearing compatriot could not describe to my deafened ears. I settled in the rear seat, behind the co-pilot. Lift off is an incredible sensation. A feeling one is being lifted into the sky on the lightest of angel wings. The ground started to move like a merry-go-round as the helicopter rose into the air. The way the grass beneath made a circular pattern from the downwash of the rotors reminded me of a dance step.
Hovering a little above the tarmac, it is not so bad, only 10 feet off the ground; maybe we could continue our tour at this altitude not much higher then a stepladder. I could probably handle that…But NO the chopper kept ascending higher! The geography was so different from being on the ground. I was able to see 2 oceans, the gulf and another ocean of stylish roofs and swimming pools and streets. Viewing treetops at eye level is exhilarating. I wonder what observations the Wright brothers would have made about a helicopter flight!

Things looked vastly different from the air. My heart was in my throat as the chopper tilted over a row of houses and my friend, the co-pilot was busy excitedly pointing to her house, for me it felt as it the ground was suddenly beside us instead of below us, putting the rides back to the future at Universal Studios to shame!
When you stop to think of all the millions of people who have lived on this earth who wanted to fly , knowing now there are many miraculous machines from airplanes, helicopters and even space ships that will carry mankind to far and vast galaxies, dreams for many have come true others are still chasing theirs, for me to go up in this fantastic flying bird was a great way to get a case of the willies, though I knew I was in good hands, as we all are , those of us whom are in Gods’ hand know that the willies will only last for so long, it is up to those of us who know to spread the word.
NOTE: My special thanks to Glen Ferguson, of JAARS, Mission at the Airport for making my getting a little closer to heaven possible, I am happy to have my feet back on the ground… AMEN !
