Anthony Marzola Continued ...
Tom Cooney (T.C.), Vice President and Co-founder of Lily the Love Frog, Inc interviewed Anthony Marzola (A.M.).
T.C. What are some of those differences?
A.M. Personally I take more time now researching everyday things, look at it try to understand more – maybe something before I did not care to understand or didn’t understand now there are many different things I look at totally differently then 2 years ago part of that is influenced by the deaf culture, my observation - learning about the oppression by hearing people the deaf have to endured makes me also think about others as well- different colored people …just makes me think.
T.C. What is the difference between Hearing and Deaf Students based on your experiences at Saint Petersburg College?
A.M. Really, I don’t know many deaf students maybe 2 or 3 I know good when I was in practicum classes d I have the opportunity to observe, If I were a deaf student it would be hard, the deaf student has more challenges – watch the board, watch the interpreter watch the teacher trying to understand English words, vocabulary, reading; It’s hard even with an interpreter it’s hard. The interpreter offers some benefit to the deaf student My opinion is the 2 year program for an interpreter training program is not enough I believe it should be a 4 year program. That’s why I am not ready, I feel I just started to understand the language, how can I interpret now and give good service. How is two years enough??
T.C. Do you have any secrets any tips?
A.M. With students that are starting when a teacher gives you a book read the whole thing immediately fast. Don’t stop finish the whole book – read every day! Take 20 - 30 min a day read the books everyday– that’s my secret!
T.C. What are your goals?
A.M. First I really want o become a writer, I write fiction and I am thinking about adding deaf characters into my writing I have been reading Harlan Lane, you know? (Tom nods) He’s interesting,
T.C. I am sure studying and classes really fill your time, are their any school curricular activities you participate in?
A.M. I am in the Sign Language Club, the Silent Titans; I am Vice President right now.
T.C. How many times are there activities?
A.M. Twice a month
T.C. Does the Silent Titans have any Deaf Officers?
A.M. Nope, Last semester a woman signed up and a week later she dropped all her classes, she dropped out of school, but we were all excited to have a deaf woman officer, but the deaf really not involved in the club, some watch but more for the interpreter students I think.
T.C. How do you feel you can encourage the Deaf students to be come more involved?
A.M. That’s a tough question – we tried to offer a hand to the deaf students we invite them to the meetings and we have quad events and try and make sure an interpreter is involved …I don’t know – we want them involved…
T.C. Do you feel comfortable with your sing language?
A.M. No not yet I feel like a duck out of water – I walk funny – I sign funny – I am still learning a lot That’s why I don’t’ feel ready to interpret I need more socialization I will know when the time is right!
T.C. What do you see for your future?
A.M. I know I will stay involved in Deaf Culture – I have my own Business now I sell earrings and different things, my dream is to have health food restaurant
T.C. What have you learned about Deaf People?
A.M. Deaf people are very blunt very direct – Hearing people they lie – they lie all the time!
T.C. What is your favorite sign? What was your first experience with Sign Language?
A.M. I never thought about that ---- my favorite sign (kiss) – Love (Anthony laughing) My first sign was … from Sesame Street ; I never dreamed it would lead to this
T.C. Do you remember your first sign?
A.M. – Yes from the ABC book I will go home and look at the book from My ASL 1 class!
